Tourism revenue in South Walton rises nearly 11 percent in June

WALTON COUNTY, Fla.—Aug. 14, 2017 – Tourism numbers are up this year for Florida, according to Governor Rick Scott, and the story holds true in Walton County as well. Walton County recorded $4.6 million in Tourist Development taxes in June, a new record and an increase of more than 10 percent over the same month last year.

As of June, each month this year has surpassed the previous two years in bed-tax revenue, bringing the total revenue collected so far to $14.2 million, nearly 11% ahead of the same period last year and about 23% higher than 2015.

“These numbers reflect growing interest in South Walton,” said Visit South Walton Executive Director Jay Tusa, “we are happy to see visitors are continuing to discover all that South Walton has to offer.”

The June report indicates taxes collected on short term rental sales in South Walton. The Tourist Development tax, or bed tax, is a four percent tax collected on hotels, condos and other short term rentals.

Bed taxes provide a good indication of visitor demand, as they are influenced both by number of visitors and the average daily rates of short term rentals. The revenue supports tourism marketing, beach operations including cleaning and maintaining beaches, destination improvements, and preservation.
